Rajasthan: Congress MLA demands withdrawal of quota stir cases

Congress MLA and member of erstwhile royal family of Bharatpur Vishvendra Singh on Tuesday staged a protest and courted arrest demanding the withdrawal of cases that had been lodged against protesters during the Jat agitation. The Congress leader has demanded that the cases be withdrawn before elections are announced and has threatened widespread agitation if his demands are not met in the next three days.

Heavy police force was deployed as Singh gathered with his supporters at the SP office in Bharatpur and demanded withdrawal of cases. The cases are related to blocking roads and stopping trains during Jat agitation last year.

“The government had promised that cases would be withdrawn, but has not done so as yet. I was leading the protesters so the government should arrest me or else withdraw the cases before elections are announced. I give the government three days to comply with our demands. Or else we shall launch a massive agitation on October 5,” said Vishvendra. Meanwhile, speaking to Singh, Bharatpur police expressed inability to withdraw cases as it was not their purview. However, Singh and his supporters insisted on courting arrest. They were arrested and released some time later. “Withdrawal of these cases is under consideration with the government and they will take a decision. All cases that had been lodged are still under consideration, they are not at a stage of arrest,” said Keshar Singh Shekhawat, SP Bharatpur.

Vishvendra is Congress MLA from the Deeg-Kumher seat in Bharatpur and belongs to erstwhile royal family of Bharatpur.
