Teachers and police officials came at loggerheads on Tuesday afternoon when nearly 3000 teachers – participating in a rally - were stopped by the cops from moving towards Gandhi Circle from Shiksha Sankul. The organisers of the rally had not taken permission for holding the rally and were stopped. The police had to use force to disperse the rally when a few teachers got into a scuffle with the cops. As a result of baton-charge, some of the teachers got injured.
Angered by the government’s indifference towards the demands, teachers from across the state affiliated to the Rajasthan Teachers Association (National) reached Jaipur on Tuesday for fasting. The police stopped about 3000 teachers going for fast on the Gandhi Circle from the Shiksha Sankul complex located at JLN Marg.
This caused a lot of heated debate between the police and the teachers and the cops did not let the teachers move forward. In spite of this, hundreds of teachers broke ranks and fled towards the Gandhi Circle raising slogans against the police. Since no permission had been given to hold the rally at Gandhi Circle, the cops baton charged the rally.
As a result of the baton charge, a female teacher - Sunita - suffered a head injury and started bleeding. Apart from this, some other teachers got upset with the stalemate. A fast was then initiated by holding a sit-in outside the Shiksha Sankul complex. The angry teachers started sloganeering against the government and the police. The angry teachers then started demanding that the cops arrest them.
Though the cops were reluctant to make the arrest, however, the teachers demanded being arrested or else they would not budge. Five buses were called on the direction of Additional DCP Hanuman Meena. After this, the teachers were put in the buses as a mark of arrest and they were taken away from the spot only to be released at various locations across the city.
Warning To Govt
Members of the agitating organisation claimed that if the government did not negotiate with the organisation and do not meet the demands of the teachers, then the organisation would conduct a state-wide campaign.
