Ahmedabad: Mob of 150 clashes with cops in Naroda

A complaint of rioting was lodged against a mob of 150 people with the Shaherkhotda police station on Monday after they started pelting stones at cops when they reached the spot to investigate a dispute.

The incident took place at the Health quarters near Omnagar railway crossing in Naroda. The police said they got a message on Monday night about a dispute where an accused identified as Babubhai Solanki, a resident of Health quarters, had allegedly attacked two men near the railway crossing area.

When a team of police officials reached the spot to investigate the matter and help the victims, a mob of around 150 gathered and started attacking the cops.

The police officers on the spot informed the control room for backup, after which more teams and senior police officials reached the spot and the mob was lathicharged to control the situation. After the incident, people got inside the quarters, switched off the lights and started pelting stones at the cops.

The police fired nine rounds of tear gas shells, after which the attacks stopped. The windows of a police vehicle were shattered in the incident. The police arrested 20 people in connection with the violence.

The accused have been identified as Mayur Vaghela, Manoj Solanki, Mukesh Vaghela, Kriti Vaghela, Chandrakant Vaghela, Vipul Vaghela, Bipin Japadiya, Gordar Vaghela, Prakash Solanki, Praful Vaghela, Jasu Solanki, Dharmendra Makwana, Jitendra Vaghela, Rajnikant Vaghela and Bipil Solanki.

Inspector SM Chaudhari, Shaherkhodta police station, said: "We have lodged a case of rioting in the matter against 150 people right now and have started an investigation. We have been able to nab 20 of the accused from the spot itself, while names of another 20 people have been revealed during interrogation."
