20 Sabarmati jail inmates enrol for journalism course

Navajivan Trust, an organisation founded by Mahatma Gandhi, is introducing a one-year diploma course in ‘journalism and proof-reading’ for inmates of Sabarmati Central Prison. Vivek Desai, trustee of Navajivan Trust, told reporters that the course, which will start from October 15, would provide employment opportunities in publication field to the inmates.

“We have selected 20 inmates for the course. We have made arrangements so that along with education, they also got employment,” Desai said. The course is being started as part of celebration of the 150th birth anniversary year of Mahatma Gandhi.

He also said that the Trust has joined hands with prison authorities to launch the course.

The Navajivan Trust official said that some noted names in the field of journalism and publication have been roped as faculty members to teach the prison inmates. The classes would be conducted thrice a week. According to Desai, some publication houses have agreed to give proof-reading jobs to inmates upon completion of the course.

“Navajivan Trust also requires proof-readers for its publications,” he added.
